The University of Texas in Austin has many reasons to feel proud, but the recent appointment of the university's Walter G. Bumphus to the president and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges is just one more reason for residents of Austin to brag about the city and its educational opportunities.

Bumphus, who is currently servicing at the Department of Educational Administration Chair at the University of Texas, was awarded the position after the board completed a six-month national search. Within his new position, Bumphus will take on the top leadership position within the association, which includes 1,200 community colleges.

Of course, this won't be the first time that Bumphus has taken on an important leadership position within the world of education. In fact, Bumphus has been in the industry for over 38 years, six years of which he was the system president for the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. In this capacity, he oversaw 40 different campuses comprised of 51,000 students. Bumphus also helped obtain a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor after the Hurricane Katrina disaster, which he then used to develop construction trade centers in areas of the state that were devastated by the hurricane.

At the University of Texas, Bumphus teaches for the educational department's Community College Leadership Program (CCLP), which is the oldest doctoral program for community college leaders in the country. Bumphus has also served as the president and CEO of Brookhaven College as well as for the Dallas County Community College District. In addition, he has served as the chancellor of Baton Rouge Community College and as the dean of students as well as the vice president and dean of students at Howard Community College in Maryland.
Bumphus' experiences also extend into the private educational sector. In addition to serving as a consultant to more than 100 different institutions within 26 states, he also served as the president in the higher education division for the Voyager's Expanded Learning program. With so much experience in the field and with such dedication to education and the success of community colleges, it is easy to see why this Austin educator was selected to take on such a prestigious position.
